Scutes shedding constantly

goini04 Jun 02, 2005 11:40 AM

Hello everyone,

I was interested in knowing what could be causing my red-eared sliders scutes to be shedding frequently. They never used to do that, and then I had allowed my cousin to keep them for me while I was away. After I got them back, I realized that their scutes were shedding frequently and didnt appear to stop. I know that they do it everyone once in a while and that is fine, but I am just concerned.

Any ideas would be fantastic!!

Best Wishes,
Chris

Well, if this isn't the 'normal' shedding of your turtles' scutes, then it could be caused by your cousin overfeeding your turtle(s)? Because I know that if you overfeed your turtle, their shells will grow, and this can cause serious damage because their body outgrows their organs, and it eventually kills them if done for a long enough period of time. I do not know of a way to 'stop' the shedding except to put your turtles on a 'diet' IF it was overfed by your cousin...

hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply! It does make sense, because I bought a brand new 10 oz canister of reptomin and through the summer I had used about half of it. Well I gave him the rest to use and within less than a month he had already used it all. I told him that he was feeding far too much. Furthermore, he didn't clean their water or anything!! I was really frustrated with him when I found out that he wasn't taking proper care of them. I took them back about a month ago, and it hasn't stopped since then. I have certainly cut back on feeding them compared to what they were given with him. I have 1 red eared slider and a eastern painted turtle. They are both doing it. This is why I was rather alarmed.

I hope this is something that I can reverse to a point.

Thanks again for the reply!!
