Owning copperheads in Maryland?

Alyssa84 Jun 02, 2005 11:48 AM

I stumbled over an ad in the newspaper I wanted to respond to, which listed both a redtail boa and a copperhead as give-aways. I live in Maryland, and I was pretty sure owning copperheads in this state was illegal. Am I correct on this matter? If I do contact this person regarding the boa, I'd like to be able to warn them if the copperhead should not be given away as a pet.

If you read the way the original dangerious animal law in MD was written, it basically makes it OK to have a coperhead so long as it was caught in Maryland. HOWEVER, convincing animal control that this is legal is another matter. Also, many counties have regulations making venomous reptiles illegal in the county, such as Montgomery County.
