Crickets and Pinworms...

humpbacks1962 Jun 02, 2005 02:46 PM

Here it is again:

After consulting with the State of Connecticut's Department of Agriculture's State Entomologist, the Office of the State Veterinarian, and Dr. Gidding, the top reptilian specialist in the state, they all concurred that there is absolutely no evidence to support the "crickets gave my lizard pinworms" statement. The state entomologist is aware of the "Internet chatter", but has never confirmed or heard of such assumptions.

So, I guess this settles it, until someone quotes, for once and all, a literate and educated source proving otherwise

Moral of the story: Don't believe all the chatter until someone stands up and confirms it without a shadow of doubt.

Yes, you can revive lizards with CPR, and crickets DO NOT transmit pinworms

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree! I have had crickets right out of the box tested at IDEXX Labs for parasites and pathogens, and they were found to contain:

- oxyurids (pinworm eggs)
- provendencia rettgeri (bacteria)
- proteus vulgaris (bacteria)
- klebsiella pneumoniae (bacteria)
- aeromonas species
- citrobacter freundii (bacteria)

Pinworm eggs are commonly found in soil (among other things), and anything that comes into oral/fecal contact with them are susceptible to infection (ie; unwashed produce). Fortunately, these nematodes are easily treated and pose the least health risks.

I will be happy to provide my copy of the lab report for anyone that requires it, and the following link to a legitimate and verifiable study performed at the University of Florida's Dept. of Entomology is alive and well:

Just provide the contact information, or ask the specific question to the qualified professional, for gawd's sake...

The question is: Do lizards get pinworms from crickets?
The answers on my side have been no, never heard of it, or highly unlikely

If you beg to disagree, I beg to have you consult the specifics with your reptilian specialist and professionals in your state.

One of my toads got parasites from a bad batch of crickets I got at a local pet store. I found him dead when I woke up one morning. The remaining crickets were checked and the toad was autopsied, they both had the same parasite.

Just because they have never heard of it or feel it is unlikely doesn't make it impossible.

Done! See above references.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but it's really not about being right or wrong... it's about having as much information as possible to come up with one's own opinion of what is true. In many ways, we are in the 'stone ages' when it comes to the understanding of all the facets that keep our beloved geckos healthy and thriving. There is a LOT of conflicting information out there, and we should always be open to obtain as much bonafide data as we can in order to form our own conclusions.

I am not sure why some of the important information on the subject of pinworms in feeder crickets in this thread keeps disappearing... apparently the mods are having a problem with it, so if anyone is really interested in the facts please feel free to contact me directly.
