same problem you had, matt...

umop_apisdn Jun 02, 2005 03:15 PM

well, one of my female pietschmanni has been getting a little lethargic recently, and normally they are very active feeders, but within the past week or so ive noticed this female just sitting around, barely moving at all through the night. she actually just had her first bad shed a couple weeks ago, which i soaked her and helped her out with. she spends most of the day and night just draping herself over the branches with her hind legs hanging into the air (limbs still functional, and not shaky, though). i scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning to get her into the vet, so hopefully everything will be treatable. all of my others are doing fine otherwise. it just kinda sucks that i finally got a male at the beginning of last month to make it to 2 pairs, now one of my females falls ill. the symptoms seem really similar to what matt was claiming, so im hoping that ill have as easy of a time treating it as he did. lets keep our fingers crossed! she's been in great health for over a year now, i guess its possible that it's just old age, but this cant be her time!

it's day 3 since my last phantasticus hatchling came out, but the clutchmate still hasnt emerged. i know ive totally recommended against cracking eggs open, but i never thought of this circumstance. how much longer do you all recommend i should let it go before seeing if there was actually anything in the egg?

I have had Henkeli hatch 5 days apart and both were fine. I would say if it hasn't hatched by 1 week after the other I would slit the egg, But they have hard shelled eggs so it might be kinda hard to do! Good Luck with them though!!!! Erik

well, i had some majorly undercalcified crested eggs at 85 days ( this was tuesday...) one all of the sudden got soft at 85 days, so i opened it. fully formed crested but it was dead. so the clutch mates egg was still firm. so i was going to let it go. the next morning i got bored and decided i was going to open it. slit it up and a perfectly fine crested jumped out and was runnin all over the place right after it got out. not to mention the incubator got up to 91 degrees a couple of weeks ago...

So sorry Mike. It sounds almost exactly like what my female had. The illness corresponded to egg laying and she laid 2 eggs approximatly a week and a half after she started showing symptoms. The symtoms of my female were inactivity, inability to grip anything, loss of appetite, a bad shed which I had to help her out with, lots paniced screaming with bits of franic movement, and slight shaking of the toes. I thought it was MBD but I turned out to be a severe infection. The good news is she has recoved. It took two weeks of medication two times a day and force feeding two times a day but it was worth it. I hope she does ok. Hopefully the vet will be able to fix her right up. Also in regards to the eggs. My pietschmanni eggs hatched 3 days apart so I wouldn't be too worried. I wouldn't ever recommend cracking open an egg. If the gecko is too weak to get out there is little chance it will survive very long.

Matt what kind of infection was this. I have a crested female that has had the exact same symptoms.

Mad_1234 Jun 03, 2005 05:57 PM

It was a bacterial infection of some sort I believe. The only way to tell for sure what your gecko has is to get blood work done because a number of diseases have the same symtoms.

Thanks Matt -

Will start with fecals and go from there.

well, i took her in this morning. off the bat, of course the vet couldnt really tell me anything other than what i was already able to recognize. they're gonna do a lot of work on her, and the deposit alone for my bill was $163. i dont think i was as lucky as you, matt. this vet has a reputation for being pricey, but i just hope they can help her get better. worse yet, the bill can go up to $250. can't say im excited about that, but if they're able to pep her up again ill be happy at least, and hopefully she will be happy as well. i know the vet's gonna be happy taking my paycheck from me.

Mad_1234 Jun 03, 2005 06:19 PM

Well I hope everything works out. I was lucky enought to get an awesome vet who dealt only in exotics. My bill was about 130 which pretty low considering the vet spent a whole 45min just talking to me about her plus they did a very comphrensive evaluation of her. Did they give you any idea about what she might have? Did they check for eggs or if she was egg bound? Did they do a blood test? If you are going to pay this much make sure you get your moneys worth. At least you got your female in early. When I brought mine in she was practically in a coma, curled up in a little ball on the floor unable to move and dehydrated when I brought her in. I wish you and your little gecko the best of luck. Hopefully the reason she is acting so unusual is just because she is gravid and about to lay.

parasites. i couldnt tell if the lady on the phone said trichinosis or trichi-something, but there was that and amoebas. i only got to call in and im kinda in a hurry, but shes being treated for that, and hopefully when i get a chance to pick her up the vet can explain things better. maybe the bill wont end up being that $234828373 after all. looks like snails might not have been the best idea...but how can i be sure this is even where it came from...now i gotta get the whole trio fecal'd.
