First, leave him alone for about a week or two. Spot clean his cage during this time and feed him, but let him get used to his new surroundings. After that, take him out for short "training" periods. Handle him for about 15 minutes a day for about a week. If he seems comfortable earlier than a week, then increase the time about 5-10 mins. until he is totally comfortable. Also HANDFEED when you take him out. I have figured out that handfeeding can be a great bonding experience for a greeny.
Also, keep in mind that there is a slight possibility that your iguana will never become totally tame. If you handle him and handfeed him and give him lots of attention, the chances of him not being calm are pretty slim. As mentioned in alot of other posts, tame iguanas bite. They all WILL bite you. Not out of aggression per say, but sometimes mistakes are made, i.e. during feeding they may accidentaly nip ya. Not so bad until they are 4-6 foot and "nip" ya. Good luck and congrats on the new pet! -Joe
i agree, handfeeding is an excellent way to help taming down your iggy. but, be careful. my oscar thinks that any food item i have in my hand is hers, including pizza, turkey sandwiches and hamburgers! it was very intimidating when my boyfriend and i were lounging on the couch with oscar, and when i pulled out a slice of pizza and she lunged across the couch to steal a bite from my hand. i was in shock! she kept trying to steal more, so she must have liked it. no more eating junk food infront of oscar.
Yeah I can't believe I forgot about that!!! If you hand feed, like the above post states They think EVERYTHING is food lol. Including your hand if you have something in your hand.
yes, it's very scary the first time you are trying to carry your full grown iggy, a sandwich in your mouth, and trying to lock your front door, and your iggy, who is on your shoulder, reaches around and takes your sandwich right out of your mouth. i think she knew exactly what she had done b/c she jumped off of my shoulder and ran to a corner to devour what she knew was mine.
he is not bad once i get him out but when he is in the cage he try to whip and bite but once i get him and hold him he will eat out my hands and sit pretty good but if i put him back or sit him down anywhere in the house when i try to pick him back up it is right back to the whipping and bitting.thanks for all the helpE)
yeah, you should probably get used to that. Oscar throws a fit, not everytime, but often enough, when i pick her up. As soon as i start petting her and rubbing her head it's like she's thinking "oh, yeah. i remember you. we like eachother." it's especially bad when we go outside for a bit, then it comes time to catch her and go back inside. i've never seen her run so fast as when it's time to go back to her room!
will today my room mate was trying to get all friendly with him and got a little to trusting and hi took a bite out of his ear LOL it was not all that bad of a bite but it was funny

Please read my Iguana Care, Feeding & Socializationarticle for information on proper care and taming and socialization.
You should also get him checked out by your reptile vet. If you don't already have one, check out the lists at my Herp Veterinarians page.
