Update: Egg Bound female post below....pics of egg and embryo

bthacker Jun 02, 2005 10:33 PM

Well I am so happy I didn't listen to the advice below of rushing my female to the Vet for them to do whatever they would have done to her because she popped the two eggs that were in her out today. I gave her a moist hide box and I think that might have triggered her to lay? Who knows.

One of the eggs was hard and yellow the other looked like it was fertile even though she supposedly hadn't been with a male this season. I am thinking it might have been from stored sperm last year or she possibly could have held it from last year? I cut the egg open(it was a solid soft white egg) to find an embryo complete with two little eyes. Has anyone cut open retained eggs to find this sort of thing without a breeding attempt?

I am so happy I just saved a bunch of money and possibly a snake's life not to mention her being able to lay and breed in the future by not taking her to the Vet. Sounds crazy but do yourself a favor and get second and third opinions on the matter before jumping on someone's "expert" advice.

It always a huge sign of relief when your animals come out of danger on their own or with help.

Thats great you decided NOT to take your animal to the vet(experienced professional) after a couple weeks of being egg bound and everything turned out fine.

However I do not agree with the mentality of saving a buck over saving a life.

I have said my piece and will not comment any further.

Again you have no idea who I am or what I am about. All I was doing was asking for some tips on helping my snake. Getting egg bound happens to animals and they don't die immediately and it isn't a life and death situation after a few days. So if your animals get egg bound.....go ahead and run to the Vet so they can charge you to cut your snake open and forcefully remove the eggs. What did you do when your snakes got egg bound?

I have spent $500 dollars on a Boa and Indian Python last month. My Boa ended up croaking with what appeared to be improper treatment. If I would have taken my Hognose to the Vet.....more than likely they would have loved to make a buck and cut her open or done something else to jeopardize her life and prevent her from laying again.

So you can say your "peace" all you want you have no idea what you or that other guy is talking about. I was given poor advice from a tech who is paid by a Vet.

I have said my peace.

Thanks

I read and re-read the complete thread from a different perspective and can now understand your point of view.

You are correct. Money shouldn't be an issue in regards to care. In many cases it is better to let nature take its course, with patience and understanding.

Sorry, if I offended you. Valuable lesson learned over here.

I'm sure you realize, anxiety and other emotions get the best of all us reptile lovers.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the comment, I truly appreciate it. I have been working with reptiles on and off for over 10 years. I have kept and bred a few different species and I would say that I am an experienced keeper to a degree. That doesn't mean I know everything. I am willing to admit that and that's why I come here and ask for a little help. No shame and no ego burnt. I understand taking animals to the Vet is necessary sometimes but you are right about letting nature try and fix things first and that's what I was trying to do first.

I think me putting in a moist hide may have helped her to feel secure and lay her eggs. She ate a rat last night and she is eating one as we speak. So she definitely is feeling better!!!

I still would like to know how she had an embryo in the egg I cut open? Anyone?

Thanks again Rich.

Take care-

Brett

I suspect it continued to develp inside her, i have a friend whos hog laid 8 eggs, then 2 weeks later laid another 6, wierd thing is, they all hatched together, so even though they were inside her, they had develpoed at the same rate. Just for the record, i have had a number of female hogs retain eggs, but they have ALWAYS spontaneously gotten rid of them.
