Vermiculite and Incubation questions....

Savvgawd Jun 03, 2005 12:42 AM

First about the vermiculite. Are there certain brands/different types of vermiculite I should get rather than another? Are there any reasons for using one kind over another? I went to a normal landscape store today and bought some normal vermiculite for potting plants. Anything I should change around?
Now about the incubator. I have no real incubator and was caught by surprise with gecko eggs. I got a small heat pad, set the new temp to 88 with a helix 1000, and sprayed the rubbermaid container the heatpad is inside with water to crank the humidy up. The temp (with a differnt temp gauge) reads 88-89 and the humidy just says HI meaning over 75%. Anything I can change around or any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

Either vermiculite or perlite or a combination of the two should work. See my posting re: vermiculite vs. perlite earlier in this forum. Make sure there are no odors associated with either medium.
Leopard gecko eggs are temperature dependent; females eggs develop at the lower range; if incubated at too high of a temp. you may have sterile males or dead eggs. See the incubation references for proper temperature ranges. There are sites on "how-to-buid homemade incubators"--use google or check-out KS postings.
