Supplement for Crested geckos?

m1ke386 Jun 03, 2005 01:40 AM

Hi, I just purchased two crested geckos from a reptile show in my area. The smallest one was born in April 05, and the larger one in Jan05. Right now i'm using Miner-All by stick tongue farms to supplement their diet. My concern is that i don't want to over supplement them. Right now i feed them every other day, and dust the crickets every time i feed. Is this to much? Or, should i dust the crickets once or twice a week? I was told to dust them at every feeding for the smaller one. Thanks for your help.

Mike.

With babies, I think feeding more and supplimenting with calcium is more important because they are still growing and forming bones, ect.

We were told to feed 5x week every crickets & baby food alternating days. Personally, we've been offering approx 3 crickets every day with baby food available over night too. We take the baby food out in the morning, but there normally aren't any crickets to remove! I dust all the crickets. I also just got some CGP and am trying to get him to eat that w/ the baby food right now off my fingers (he'll take a little bit) Loki is about 6-7 weeks old now.

I also added a UV coil light over a corner of a cage and notice that he really seems to like it! He'll stay over towards that side of the cage sleeping during the day, normally with pieces & parts of his body stuck out in the light. I'm only using it for about 6 hours/day, but figure it certainly can't hurt to try it. (I know they aren't supposed to "need" any additional light or heat, but hey...)

Personally I don't believe in baby food. It's full of sugars and preservatives (unless you're reading labels) and fills them with empty calories and like children, gets them hooked on sugar. I would suggest using the T-Rex crested or gargoyle meal powder, and when feeding crix, just dust the crix with the meal powder to reinforce that that's what food tastes like. The meal powder has plenty of supplements. I've also started mixing the meal powder with Bolthouse Farms Berry Booster fruit juice or Strawberry Banana which stimulates their appetites without sugar.

Just an FYI, but the baby foods no longer add any sugar. They are all 100% fruit with some absorbic acid/Vit C for preserving. Have an 8 month old DD and am a major label reader LOL.

Fruit DOES have natural "sugars" if that was what you were meaning...

You also could just go buy a fresh peach and bannana and then shove it in your blender. (You can also add supplements if you want) and freeze whatever you don't use.

That shows how long it's been since I even LOOKED at a baby food label! I gave up in disgust some time ago. So glad that you're an informed consumer.
