Nail problem with Mt Meru! Blood Help!

jgamboa888 Jun 03, 2005 07:22 AM

My male mt meru kept falling off the sides of his repitarium and I was wondering why. I took him out and i noticed that two of his feet were bleeding, slightly. I took him out of his cage and placed him in a aguarium to prevent further harm. One foot had no apparent problems and after applying antibacterial ointment that foot is perfectly fine. The other foot has a nail that is turned 90 degrees, so it is turned sideways. He cant grip hard with this foot because of his sidway nail that must have been caught in the repitarium mesh. How do I treat it? I don't want to take him to the vet just yet because he hasn't eaten in 3 days and barely drank so I feel him I put him under more stress it will cut the cake for him. Should I pull the nail out?

The nail will probably fall out by itself if the nailbed is damaged. But, to help in the mean time maybe you could clip it off short so he isn't snagging it and hurting it further. Keep on with the Polysporin to help protect it from infection. If the toe swells and gets stiff or hard you may need a course of antibiotics to keep the infection from spreading. Good luck!

Do I put him bag in his cage, I don't want to have him keep falling but he looks really stressed in the aqaurium and he still hasnt eaten any silkies/crix/mealworms/mealbeatles.

He'll be less stressed in his cage, but I'd suggest really filling it with live plants so he can climb around very easily. One reason some chams climb the screens a lot is because they don't have enough foliage to move around in.
