a few questions regarding roaches

ecoguard_79 Jun 03, 2005 08:01 AM

i want to start a roach breeding colony, and i was wondering about their optimal/maximum temperatures.
i have a property away from the city near montreal qc, and i have an old rig trailer that i would like to use, but i have concerns about it getting a bit warm in the summer.
i am sure that water wont be a problem, i am just concerned about the heat
also what kinds of roaches are best to breed for leopard and fat tailed geckos, and berbor skinks.

Roaches can be kept anywhere from 75-95F. My typical containers are 80-85 on the cool side and 90-95 on the hot side. If you keep them warmer it's important to give them proper moisture, because they will die pretty fast. I personally think Blaptica dubia is one of the best feeders in the world. At the size you would be using them at they are very soft bodied and make great feeders. Discoids and orange heads would also work. Newer species like blatta lateralis that are the same size as cricket, don't smell, don't climb, don't burrow would be an ideal choice, but they still are very tough to get. I have a few more secret weapons that I'm working on, but it will be a little while before they are ready.
