Worth breeding my Suriname?

ecmorrell Jun 03, 2005 11:49 AM

I'm already engaged in a snow project and a sunglow project and hopefully a triple het project... would it be worth my time and money to find a female Suriname for my pet boy? I got him to be a pet since he had such a nice personality. Do Surinames sell well? Are the prices likely to drop fast? Please advise.

I don't think the money for "normal" BCC will EVER be that of morph BCI. I personally don't care about the money. I have morphs but I'm a locality guy. I just love the look of BCC. I do think the morph market will drop dramitically here shortly. That is just my thoughts, but then again I'm the person that said the cost of housing couldn't keep going up in Calif. I was wrong there too...lol.

Do it for the love of the hobby!!

Take care,
Alex

ps we need more people breeding BCC because it is harder.

I love the hobby, of course But with my 20 or so animals I don't need a ton of BCCs that I can't sell. I do love my Suriname though!

Good looking BCC's seem to sell well thats why they are few and far between in the classifieds. The problem with selling average looking BCC's is that there are allot of imports to compete with. If your looking to make allot of money then BCC's is not the way to go

I'm curious as to what you base your opinion on as far as the "Morph Market" dropping dramatically in the near future??
Thanks

I think they will too. Boas have large litters, same thing that lead to the crash of corn and burmese markets.

As it has been said before by several others on this forum in the past, the truest and most reliable price point is the one that is based on how easy or difficult the species is to breed. See the corn snake market for proof of this....or the going price of ghost bci's this year. It takes a more experienced keeper to be successful with bcc than bci, and I think there is definitely room in that market for many more breeders.

.. BS advice there!

Good-quality CB BCC are worth more now than ever before. Each successive generation of today's popular MORPH is worth less. Just check the facts... it is true that imports are competition, but not to the informed buyer, which is the top market.

I have no argument with people who produce morphs (as long as they are marketed as such).. and there is a big market for a lot of them.. but anybody who tells you that healthy Surinames or other true redtails are worthless is entirely wrong.

In my opinion.

Nice BCC are commanding the same price as they did 12 years ago, probably increased a tad. CB average looking BCC will sell for a decent price as well. If you want to have BCC babies you shouldn't have too much trouble wholesaling a lot I don't think. If you want to take a stab at it then go for it. Don't let "market conditions" dictate what you want to produce, I would say in my own opinion they are good anyways.

I think it would be worth your time. A nice Suriname with a great personality would be in great demand. Go for it.

CE Jun 04, 2005 10:02 AM

and I mean that! There are alot around these days, but if you breed what the masses want you will have no problem selling them. Average animals will sell also, but at a lower price. I've personally seen a litter of baby suris sold at the same price or more then a litter of albino bci or DH sunglows... imagine that!
