I feel horrible asking this!...Lizard feeders?

Chamcham505 Jun 03, 2005 04:50 PM

Hey...
I try to offer my Male veiled a large variety of plant matter and insects. He will eat just about anything, and I got to wondering about feeding him mice and...geckos. Ive read many Veiled caresheets, and many say they encourage keepers to feed veileds pinky's and feeder gecko's and anoles. Now, from another article I read, the author stated "pinky's have a high fat content, and carry little nutrients." Now, Is it all right to feed my male veiled small geckos, anoles, or pinkies? Of course I would feed them only occasionally! Thanks in advance, and ALL input is appreciated!

You could, but I wouldn't. You run great risk for parasites with little in return. Sure it's variety, but I don't think it's worth it. Literally. The amount of nutrition in a pinky or lizard is smaller than the amount in the same dollar's worth of crickets.

They CAN digest them just fine (I've seen it myself), but it's simply not worth it just for the parasite risks.

I've fed my 13 inch long male (actually, my BROTHER fed it to him...) veiled a fuzzy - open eyes and everything. Eaten with no problem, digested just fine, bowel movement had a bit of hair, but that was it - digested the WHOLE thing about as good as any snake I've seen. High in fat, low in everything else.

The only reason to do this is to see how "cool" it is for a chameleon to grab a vertebrate from 15" away.

Been there, done that... still not worth it in my opinion.

I feed mine mice pinkies when they are available from my breeders. Don't see a problem with it if given in moderation. They've never had an ill effect and they love the variety.
