grubs/beetles in with crickets

flamedcrestie Jun 03, 2005 05:39 PM

anyone know what kind they would most likely be? the grub is kind of flattened and has somewhat " platy" sections. the beetle is somewhat small ( slightly smaller than the grub or whatever it is) and is black.
i've seen 1 or 2 of the grubs in the crickets before, but never 40 or 50 in one box, and never seen the beetles in there.
any info would be appreciated, thanks
andrew

If the grubs are a little furry, they are dermestid beetles. They eat a lot of dead and decaying matter. I have a colony of them just to clean up after my crickets. They are also really good very cleaning bones and what not. Especially if you want the bones perfectly clean.

thanks jason. it sounds like that's what they are.
i figured they were probably harmless, but it obviously isn't a cricket and i didn't know if it was a bad thing. do you feed off the grubs, or the beetles to any of your animals?
thanks again

I do actually. I will be breeding these this month to get more because they are great for cleaning up messes in general. I am most likely going to start using pill bugs too. Hopefully they will be just as prolific. I tend to let the demestid beetles breed in my cricket containers just because they are great for everything.

i think youll find that the pill bugs are prolific. they're really everywhere wherever they are. especially if you have leaf litter.

(yes, im working on it!!)

I know what you are talking. I feed the grubs to my hatchlings geckos. They are as jason said great cleaners, much better than pill bugs.
