Eating Peat Moss

Tarzana Jul 13, 2003 10:19 AM

In my humid hide I have peat moss, and haven't had any problems. Today when I was misting the peatmoss I noticed that there is quite a bit less than there was before. There is none kicked out onto the ground because the hole is on the top of the hide. Has anyone ever heard of a leopard gecko eating peatmoss, or does it just need replacing? I am just worried that my leo is eating it, even though she has plenty of food and supplements. Thanks-KL

Leos will lick at soil or sandy substances to get minerals and trace elements from them, although I have never heard of a leo actually taking chomps out of a bedding on purpose. If she is eating it, its not good for her, and remove the peat moss and replace it with wet paper towels. The paper towels dry out faster, but do make a nice humid hide when moist, and cannot be eaten. Good luck!

Thanks, I never really thought about using paper towels as a substrate in a humid hide. I think I will give it a try though, because even if she isn't eating the peatmoss it is better to be safe.

I use paper towel in the humid hides just have to remember paper dries out faster than other substrates so you have to mist it in the morning and at night.
