Unfortunately........

chameleon2005 Jun 03, 2005 07:09 PM

Hello,

Due to work commitments of over 60 hours per week, I feel that I have no choice in selling Zeus(my male albino burmese).

I believed that I was able to give one a home for life, I am close to tears with parting with my baby boy, my descision is made with only his health in mind, there is no way I can give him the time and care he needs anymore, I will never allow an animal to suffer in my care!

Anyways my advice to everyone with a burm and (perhaps more importantly!)anyone considering getting one, is really, really try to think if you can accomodate one for LIFE, as Mr.Carmicheal often says and correctly emphasises, not many can, and they are NOT ideal pets for most herpers. And Breeders, stop breeding the damn things, your adding to a crazy problem, sorry has to be said!!

Just incase, I am 26 years old live with my partner with 2 children, I took my time( 2 years!) in deciding to take a burm on and unfortunately I was wrong in my planning. I am not a kid who took one on, on the spur of the moment, I worked in a pet shop for 3.5 years and knew all about them, I spoke to others who kept these animals, I knew exactly what I was taking on, I am not looking for sympathy here at all!! I have to say that 'most' people on here will re-home their burms, amid a host of different reasons, on reflection are these the reasons we tried to out justify when we contemplated buying one?

After everything I have ever said I am truely distraught, I feel that I have let myself, Zeus and the hobby down, another burm up for re-homing!

Anyway I`ll shut up and I`m away to sit in a corner for a while!

Phil

Phil, don't beat yourself up too badly. There is a big difference between a mistreated and abandoned burm (which many come our way each year) and one that was given the best home possible and due to life changes, need to find a good home for their prized pet. You did your best and you should be commended for wanting nothing but the best for your burm; hope you find a good home for this animal. Rob Carmichael

Rob,

Thanks for the kind words. I would like to think that at one point in the future I would own another burmese, but really to be honest, I dont think that it is realistic, thats what upsets me most.

Take Care

What made you decide that you can't properly take care of it all of a sudden? Money issues? Time issues? Granted they do need time, but not as much time as other creatures. So I am kind of confused as to what led you to this decision?

Why would working 60 hrs a week keep you from taking proper care of a burm? It only takes a couple minuets a day to fill a water dish and scoop up a pile of poop. If that is seriously your only reason for finding your burm a new home i would strongly reconsider. I dont know your situation but i wouldnt imagine you are going to be working that much for the rest of your life. I wish you luck in whatever you end up doing...if its giving your snake away i hope you find somone who will take care of it as well as it sounds like you do.
Please dont take this the wrong way i am seriously just curious.

Hi,

To answer danny`s points first;

This is not an all of a sudden decision, I have fought against this in every and any way that I can, at the end of the day I only hold the animals best interest at heart! Money issues don`t enter the picture, time, yes does.

"Granted they do need time, but not as much time as other creatures."
I have to strongly disagree with you there!! I dont agree with keeping herps, I agree with keeping pets ( I know a can of worms is opened now!) whether we like to admit it or not, to me they are pets. I dont agree with the point that pets can be trusted etc, no animal can be trusted at all, crying out loud i can hardly trust most people i meet!! So if I make the commitment to keep a 'pet' then i will do my best to give them the best possible life i can. As a burmese can be handled then to me, it should be handled, not just fed and cleaned, i dont have the time to handle him as much as he needs or what i would like to!! therefore he isn`t getting as much exercise as needed and then will surley get fatter and unhealthier and again to me, i am failing him if thats the case!

Jason, its not the rest of my life I am concerned about its zeus`s, Granted it only takes a few minutes to clean water but the defactation of a large snake take quite a bit longer to properly and hygenically clean!
