Copper My new leopard gecko a few questions(first time owner)

StepyGeckoGirl Jun 03, 2005 09:23 PM

I found this gecko food at the pet store I got him at which was mini flies or something of that nature slowly dried to retain vitamins and such. I didn't know if it would be good by itself so I got meal worms. I plan to look into crickets(even though I don't wanna touch em) once my baby boy is bigger. But it seems like he ate some of the flies but no meal worms. He isn't real small but still a baby. Also I know babies are supposed to be excitable but he seems really scared he calmed down last night and licked the glass if I put my finger by it. And I even held him yesterday when I got him home and he was ok he even let me look under him to see his sex. But today he runs and won't let me pick him up and he acts like he's really frightened and kinda jumped at me and then licked his mouth I'm wondering if he was gonna bite me. but then again he could just be scared still being in very new surroundings. Does he hate me?!? I named him copper because my mom saw him for the first time and said he looks like a copperhead and my sister said he looks like a snake(also because I couldn't think of what to name him and usually come up with names for pets in a few minutes lol) I think he is jungle because I have compared him to some pictures on the net. Any feedback would be helpful :-D

I don't recommend switching to crickets when the babies gets older. Go ahead and train him to eat meallies and both of your lives will be better. I wouldn't use any commercial diet..most of htem aren't good and it's alot better for the gcko to hunt and eat live food. Try cutting open the mealworms butt and putting some of the guts on the baby's mouth and usually they will gobble the meallie up. After a while they will eat out of a dish full of meallies like a pro. Just make sure the dish isn't that tall.

Some baby geckos aren't hyper and excitable. Your gecko is probably just one of the calmer ones. Don't handle him for the first week, let him settle in and then you can let him start getting used to you. Geckos lick their surroundings to see what it is, just because hte gecko lips his licks or sticks out his tongue doesn't mean he's gonna bite you. Babies only bite if held down and htey feel they need ot defend themselves. It doesn't hurt ifthey bite you though. I doubt your gecko hates you, geckos don't have deep feelings like that, they have instincts.

Is there any way you could post a pic so we could help you determine the morph of your gecko?

Congrats on your new pet. Feel free to email me if you want.
