Anyone else have a finicky eater?

chibicricket Jun 03, 2005 11:11 PM

Unless my leo has a variety of food to choose from on a weekly basis, she goes into these little annorexic time periods. Is that normal? (She has been tested for parasites, came back negative.) I give her mealies and crickets as her staple diet, and treat her with a couple of waxworms once a week. She used to gobble down crickets like a total pig, but after she got older, lost interest in them and moved onto mealies. Now she'll eat a few crickets every so often, but will have weeks where she won't touch them. The same thing happens with mealies. She always eats the waxworms! I can see why they are called lizard candy! Is there any kind of staple food source for finicky geckos? Or should I just keep rotating the crickets and mealies?

She loves waxies, and knows you're a sucker for manipulation... hehe
Waxies aren't bad, just very fattening. If she has lost some weight, let her have them. You can keep feeding her fatties, just fewer.

Has anything changed around her? Is she stressed out? Did you move her? Did it get noisier? The cat too curious about her?
Something got her thinking about motherhood?

Since we don't have to worry about parasites, give her a few more days and watch her weight.

I had one like that, tested negative, was not ovulating, nothing changed around her. I freaked out when her shoulders showed through. Even with negative fecal, the vet still gave her something to kill whatever else that could have been missed. A one-shot dose that people also report increases their apetite.

Then he felt her jaw and was surprised to see how soft it was. Certain that I was giving her proper calcium, the doc gave me Neocalglucon to give her a drop twice a day, and said it could even be related to calcium deficiency. You can special order Neocalglucon from your local pharmacy. A huge bottle for about $15 or so, but then you can keep adding it to her waterbowl.

I gave her a full syringe of slurry twice a day, reducing it to once a day (in the mornings). I started teasing her with waxies, and now she even eats their moths.

She's not having any problems really because of it, and she looks great. I just wanted to know if there was a food type that finicky geckos will eat all the time that I could use a staple. I have to rotate her food choices in order to get her to eat, and I'm also worried what will happen when she gets bored with those.

Hmmm... mine go through periods where they don't much eat for a bit, period. It doesn't really matter what I offer them (unless its something really good!!! lol)

If they spend more time on their cool side of the tank I notice they eat less then when they hang out in the heat, for example.. since the heat speeds up the digestion process (I believe, I know this is the case with other reptiles so I just assumed the same with my leos).

Maybe its also linked to shedding? Or yeah maybe you have a fussy Leo... hehe

Last night I gave them a variety of food at one meal, a couple of supers, some mealies in their dish, and crickets... they ate everything in no particular order.

Oh I just remembered something, when Stryke was a little heavier then I like her, she got lazy and would only eat the food that didn't move too fast.. now they hunt and are very entertaining to watch =)

I'm probabaly babbling but I have only had one cup of coffee today.. *yawn*

Yeah my female is kinda finicky. She weighs around 70grms so when she decides she aint hungry and don't want to eat her mealies i leave her be. When she gets hungry she will eat in her own time. I tried her on some crix and she wasn't interested at all.

Leos will go on "strikes" sometimes when they get bored with their food, alot fo times they won't lose weight or anything so it's not a big deal. You said you were feeding a variety so I think your gecko is just a bit for picky and gets bored with food VERY fast...lol.

You can give roaches a try. My guys had gotten lazy, and would only eat mealworms because they don't have to do anything to get them. They would ignore the crickets (I don't like them anyway). Once I got them to try a roach, they'll run all over trying to get one. They love them.

Lobster roaches stay about the same size as a cricket, but they can climb glass....which can be bad as you can imagine. I'm using Discoids (Bluberus discoidalis), which get about 2 - 2 1/2" long as adults, but can be fed to leos as nymphs (as small as 1/4". The great part is they don't fly or climb glass. I'm still new to roaches, but what my leos love, I love! Also, if you have something bigger (like a bearded dragon) in the house, you can feed it the roaches that are too big for the leos.
