To Feed or Not Tol Feed

CodyNolen Jun 04, 2005 12:01 AM

I have a friend who raises chickens. He is going to give me some chics for free.

I am currently feeding LARGE mice to my 2' ball. Once a week.

Would feeding chics be okay?

I really wouldn't recommend it.

#1. Chances are that your ball won't recognize the chick as food anyways. Leading to...

#2. A chick can be quite defensive and if it feels threatened (which it most likely will) it could result in serious injury to your ball python.

Even if you were to kill the chick and offer it to your ball it most likely won't eat it. Stick to rodents. Try switching to rats if you don't want to feed mice anymore. If your ball is eating large adult mice it shouldn't have much difficulty tackling a small rat.

I never fed any kind of poultry to my balls or boas because of the feedback from others that have. Real stinky stool that is not firm so it's messy and smelly. Also, a few boa keepers that I spoke with felt that it was a source of disease. If your willing to deal with the mess and odor I would recommend that you freeze for at least 30 days. I have been told that freezing for 30 days will kill off anything that is infectious. All hearsay since I have not tried chicks but it was enough to discourage me.

Unless you have a snake that is refusing to eat - I would stay away from anything other than mice and rats.
