My Redfoot Sounds...

turtle_22 Jul 13, 2003 10:56 AM

Hi,

In the daytime, I have my redfoot in his enclosure and then he'll start climbing at the walls and making that quacking or clucking sound. That's his way (I think) of telling me "I wanna come out!"...and so I let him out and he roams all around the house. He loves to go into my mother's bedroom and right under the bed where she sleeps, in particular! If only she knew!! ha, ha!
I am interested in knowing more about these sounds the redfoot makes. Why do they make them? Are they trying to communicate?
Does anyone know of any more scientific info or links to learn more about this. I think it's pretty cute!

Thanks!

One of my two ten week old hatchlings, Clementine, is doing the same thing. As soon as she sees or hears me in the morning she starts those 'quacking' sounds. And often, when I talk to her, she is doing it too. I am sure now, that this is her way of communicating with me.
Often she is coming out of her hide house and walking towards me at the same time.
The second hatchling is doing it on occasion and so does my three year old. But very rarely compared to Clementine.
When I mentioned it to the breeder, he said, that some of his adults as well as babies are making that sound. I have not, so far, found anything more scientific about it, but heard of similar observations about other redfoots from members of various tortoise groups. It seems, that some torts are just more vocal than others!

I've heard about this & just know that once Sal, my 3 year old discovers his voice, will never shut up!
