What kind of snake is this

elviradarknight Jun 04, 2005 11:09 AM

Hello everyone,
My son found this snake last night & brought it to me. It looks very similar to my Taiwanese Beauty snake that died a few months ago. I really miss my snake & was thrilled to see this new one. But, I am not sure what he is. Any help would be appreciated. My husband says he does not think he is a Beauty snake & thinks he might just be a wild snake. But, he was very tame & didn't thrash around at all when I handled him.
I am adding the link to see the picture of him.
Thank you
Kim

It either a bullsnake or great basin gopher snake. Where do you live?

Thank you for your answer. I am in Southern Oregon. Now my question would be what to feed him? He wasn't interested in a mouse.
Thank you so much.

was it live? You may try senting with a lizard (a live mouse is best). If that doesn't work try buying a common green or brown anole and feeding it that. If all else fails e-mail me at scottsykes@sbcglobal.net

No it wasn't live. I had some frozen ones that my Beauty snake used to eat. I imagine though if he is a wild snake he is used to hunting. So I will have to try live. I will let you know what happens.
Thank you so much for your help.

Hi, I'm sorry for your loss of your beauty snake. The snake in the picture looks like a gophersnake. (they primarily eat rodents) I have heard of gophers and kings being very docile just out of the wild.
As just a suggestion, you may be better off freeing the gopher snake where you found him (before he forgets how to hunt), and getting a captive bred one. It's getting near hatchling season for breeders. A well started captive bred baby could probably adapt better to your home than a wild snake and you'd have a really nice choice of species. (and you'd be able to see the liddle guy/girl grow up )
Good luck.

I grew up in southeast Idaho. We use to catch those all day in the owyhee desert. Give it some time, it will likely accept mice...and will eventually accept frozen thawed mice.
