Hi there,

I'm probably 40 minutes or so east of you. I had lived in this area for 20 years before I saw a single snake. Now on any given day I can usually spot any one of 5 different species. It's all about knowing where to look. Check out Jim Thorpe PA (which I think is fairly close to you), it's supposed to have a healthy population of snakes including the elusive timber rattlesnake.

Another suggestion is to join a herp club in your area and make some friends that know the local hot spots.

I do recall seeing a "funnel trap" in an AVS book on Kingsnakes but trapping snakes is not a great idea unless you have the time to check the trap every day as there is a risk of injury or death by exposure.

Good luck!

Today i decided to go down my .75 mile stretch of the creek and look for some snakes. Once me and my friend found one that looked like a milk snake or maybe a scarlet king (dunno if they are around here) swimming in the creek, but we couldnt catch him he got away. So today i was hoping to see one. I walked all the way down checking left and right but didn;t find anything. Then when i was about 10 yards from the giant tunnel that passes under the road to the other side of the creek (which is where i would have to stop because the water is so deep. Then i pondered wheter to go into the tunnell or not i had heard from friends that there were snakes in the tunnel i thought that they just said that to try to scare you from going in it. Anyway as i approaced the mouth of the tunnel sure enought i saw a decent sized snake swimming down through it. I sprinted and cut him off. Got him with a small stick i was using (i didn;t want to try to grab him he is a Water Snake - Bad Attitude!) i then proceded to get him into the pillowcase i had with me. Now hes at my house. I plan on keeping him for a couple days so i can photograph him and then ill release him into my friends pond. He is actually pretty cool loking for a water snake lots of red spots and stuff. Well i guess ill be couring the creek most everyday from now on! Never know what youll find.

Say goodbye to your wife and family my friend, you're now a field herper!

Lol, that's how I started... a canal that I had spent many weekends fishing at turned out to have lots of watersnakes when I really looked in the right places at the right times. Haven't fished since!

Congrats on you find.
