anyone using silkworms?

boy Jun 04, 2005 04:50 PM

I'm thinking about giving those a crack to see what I can do with them as far as feeders. I remember my giant anoles used to love them. speaking of which I may be picking up some of the more rare giant anoles from a gentleman in The Czech Republic. Everyone cross their fingers for me.

Jason,

We use silks sometimes, but they arent usually that big of a hit. Theres something about a good chase I suppose. I still find roaches are the hands down favorite, however it does depend what species of roach is preferred by which species gecko.

what kind of roaches are you using for your fimbriatus? I'm thinking about lobsters with my other leaftails but not sure which to go with at the moment.

The pietschmanni will be getting some lobsters this week...

I have been feeding lobsters to all of my Uros: Corkbarks, Henkeli, Mossies and phantasticus. These roaches are great other than the fact that they climb. The sizes can be fed to geckos from juvi to adult.

My henks prefer hissers over lobsters, but they still go after either.

Our fimbriatus arent very excited about lobsters, but they eat them grudgingly. They have a particular dislike for adult lobsters.. They really like quarter sized B. dubia and discoids, something about the fatter, flatter nymphs that they really enjoy. Probably helps that they dont have to chase them much, heaven forbid they get any exercise.

I tried them on my cresties and frankly, they ate them but didn't really show much enthusiasm. Neither did my leos. Frankly, after a couple of weeks of tending to the these worms I realized what a huge POA they are. It's like having another pet. Wash your hands before you handle them, grate there food over them, be sure you keep the container clean and dry and so on. I started naming the stupid things after a while!! LOL!! Finally after about 2 weeks of this I had enough and fed the whole bunch off to my chickens. Now they enjoyed them!! That was the beginning and end of my experience with silkworms.
