Rough Sex in the Turtle Pond

lkitsch Jun 04, 2005 05:03 PM

I have 3 RES's---2 females in a 100 gallon tank and a male in a 50. I separated them a couple of years ago because the male harassed the females to the point of biting and breaking skin.

Now I am thinking of getting rid of the tanks and installing a large indoor turtle pond, 200 gallons or so. Some questions:

1. I'd like to put them all together again---in a pond that large, will there be enough room so the females can get away from the male when he pesters them?

2. Is one large basking area OK, or do I need to have two? I don't think the male bothers the females out of the water.

Thanx!

Can't say 100% that things will be okay but I would try it and give the girls some underwater hideouts to escape the male if he gets too rough with them. I have had many turtles react agressively in a when first introduced into a pond and then I would simply remove the aggressive animal overnight and put him back in and everyone would co-exist nice and peacefully.

I have the same exact problem. I must keep my male Hoover, away from my other 3 RES (2 females 1 young male). He use to be fine with Eureka, they were housed together for almost 2 years with no problems. Then he began to go after her, she had a sore on her neck. If he is around Eureka or my other female Bissell he goes after them and if he gets a hold of one he doesnt let go (snaps at their heads alot and he has hungon to their rear feet). In the summer i keep Hoover in a large hard plastic kiddy pool by himself and the 3 others in a large 15" X 6ft snap set pool, filled 7 inchs deep. They have about 150 gallons of water, if i put hoover in he is like a crazy man going around that pool after them. I say don't house them together in the 200 gallon pond, you can try...i dont think it will work.
