Malnourished Baby Rescue! Help!

ptgirl Jun 04, 2005 07:25 PM

I went to the pet store for supplies and saw a malnourished Lencistic Leopard Gecko in a cage. Its head was almost totally submerged in the water bowl. Fearing the worst I contacted the person on duty. They said they knew about the gecko. It and another Lencistic were placed with Leopard Geckos but appeared to eat most of the food. They thought the Leopard Geckos were stressed and so the 2 were placed in a seperate cage. The baby began to eat less. Then its partner was sold and it stopped eating. They gave it Jump Start. The baby is a skeleton. The asking price was $69.99. I asked if they would sell for half price and was told no. However, the manager would contact his boss and see if it could be arranged. I proceeded to tell them things I felt the baby needed. Today I received a call that they would let me have the baby for free. I brought the baby home and have called it Hope. We have fed a little bit of watered down baby veal and calcium and a bit of Repta Aid. When place on the end of the mouth it will lick the food up but fall asleep. I was told it will drink water on its own. I held Hope next to the cage of my 2 Leopard Geckos and it seemed to perk up a bit. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. P.S. Hope is 4 1/4" long and weighs a little less than 1/2 oz.

I have some experience in reviving sick and malnurished geckos. In my dealings, alot of them perked up quite a bit after a couple of syringes full of pedialyte. Here's the recipe I've used alot of times and it's alwasy worked great for me:

Ingredients:

1 quart of water
2-4 teaspoons of sugar (or 1-2 teaspoons of fructose)
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

I always half this so there's not so much to deal with.
Make sure you put some calcium int eh baby food but for right now give it the baby food and the pedialyte. Keep him warm and provide water and maybe a bowl of meallies in the cage so he can have access to it at all times. I would also take a fecal (if you can get one) to the vet and get him tested for parasites. Make sure you keep him on paper towels too...keep the cage clean.

Good luck!

Keep it away from your other leopards, I may have something that is causing it to be sick.
You should keep it far away as you can from yours, wash hands well after feeding it so you don't transmit anything to your leopards. Petstores geckos can carry quite a few diseases that can easily be transported to healthy geckos.
It is a nice thing you are trying to do but not quarintineing well could cause your others to be sick, if the baby has something. Hopefully it doesn't but it is a risk, People have lost entire colections to one sick gekco w/crypto.

First thing you should do is try to get a fecal sample to the vet. Keep it well hydrated and try to feed it, and see if it needs any med form the vet. Also keep it in a small enclosure tends to help getting them to eat.
