Help - New Schneiders Skink

General_Specific Jun 04, 2005 08:31 PM

My wife bought a Schneiders Skink two days ago.

We set up his tank with a bottom heater, sand and a heat lamp. He has a warm bask area and a cool hide den.

He ran around checking out is tank, basked for a while and then buried himself in the sand. I thought he was trying to get closer to the heater, but he's actually on the cool side of the tank.

We left him meal worms, but he didn't eat. Someone advised against crickets right away as the jumping may just add to the stress. Does that make sense?

I guess he may be stressed and is hiding.

How long should I allow this without getting worried?

Doesn't he have to bask daily?

When should I expect him to eat?

Do these Skinks generally stay hidden?

If so, is there any other lizard that we can put in the tank as well?

I found this site very helpfull
http://www.helsinki.fi/~tuomola/schneider.html

I think the writer of it posts in this forum. I have found that overhead heat is better for these types of skinks that under tank heat. I use a basking light on one side of the tank and a red bulb at night.
You dont want it to hot at night so if the room is warm a low wattage bulb I find best or nothing at all. Mine hides alot but does come out and bask and explore. Yours is new and I imagine wild caught so will hide lots initially but as time goes by they are out way more.
Mine eats crickets, beetles, other insects. They will climb driftwood pieces so it nice to decorate the tank if you have the room. Since they dig so much I never used rocks but hard wood instead.
Either way the link I gave is tremendous help. They are neat after they get used to you and come out way more.

Yes, they are pretty secretive, maybe his tank should be in a low traffic area, and just give him more time to settle in.
