mona island rhino iguanas, difference?

groundskeeper24 Jun 04, 2005 09:51 PM

I'm thinking of taking a lizard that a pet store owner tells me is a mona island rhino off his hands. It is about four years old from what they say, and has been living at the store for the last year. They didn't want to sell it, but after a few months of softening them up, I think it's as good as mine. I was wondering what if and were the major differences between mona island rhinos and regular old cornuta. This one is a female, very stout despite what seems to be a far from varied diet of commercial chow. I also need to build an enclosure, so any advice would be good. I kept a large green ig when I was a kid and did a nice job with him, so the concept is not totally new to me.

The differences are very subtle, and it could be debated that
there are really just morphs of one specie. But who wants them to be just one specie -- being separate is a good thing, as it encourages Puerto Rico to protect the iguanas on Mona Island. To know the differences read the descriptions on cyclura.com. Also there is a phd dissertation on Mona Iguanas (300+ pages). To get a copy of that look at the rhino iguana section of bluetegu.com.
It would be very rare if the cyclura in the pet store is a Mona rhino. If it is, the chances are high that it entered the country illegally.
