Unusual upright standing behavior in Ambystomid salamanders

Physignathus Jun 04, 2005 11:05 PM

I have 2 texas barred tiger salamanders: 1 normal and 1 a high yellow morph. the past couple of days I have noticed, walking into the room, that they are standing upright on their hindlegs( like some varanid sp ). now they stay like this until they notice me(me moving) and then they drop down and walk towards the front of their containers. I have kept tigers in the past(mostly easterns) and have never seen this behavior. I have been trying to get pics of this but yet to be sucessful. Has anyone else who keeps tigers or other "mole" salamanders observing this? I welcome all comments and discussion on this unique behavior. I'll show pics of what they look like(not standing up). Phys, Macro, Derm

Occasionally on a rainy day I'll find my barred tiger up on his hind legs leaning against the wall of his terrarium. He'll usually stay like that until it stops raining. It's sort of entertaining to watch him do his "rain dance". Who knows. Maybe he's trying to make himself tall enough to crawl out of the cage and enjoy the shower outside.

That's cool Turtledude. But mine do not lean on anything or the sides of their containers. But you may have a point there on the rainy nights. When we started getting alot of rain here is when this started but now we are not getting the rain this unique standing has ceased. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Yours don't lean on anything? That's got to be a strange sight.

My tiger tends to stand up like that in the corners of his aquarium right after I have cleaned it and returned him to his abode. I am sure it is a trauma response. It takes a little while sometimes, maybe an hour at most, before he goes off to burrow or hide in his house again.

I may try to take a picture of him standing up next time, but nothing like stressing him out even more!
