talo Jun 05, 2005 11:09 AM

Proud new owner of a king and have read everything i can about them. but my question is on the thawed pinkies. after putting them in the tank with my snake, how long can i leave it in there? do they go bad? and do i refreeze them or just throw them out.
Please help-LOL

I'd say after about 12 hours or so, they 'go bad'. At that point they are just mush inside, so I just throw them to a turtle. I actually had a pinky sit out for about 12 hours the other day, then I refroze it. I thawed it out last night, and it just started bleeding and fell apart. Quite disgusting.

Hey... a little advice:

Try feeding your new king in a separate container, some thing big enough for him/her to move around in but small enough for the snake and the thawed pink can "meet" face to face.

Re-freezing pinkies:

I've done it but I think there's a trick to the whole thing. i.e. how you defrost the pink and how long you leave it out. defrosting prey in warm water keeps them better than if you would in boiling hot water. if the snake doesn't take the pink with in a half hr. mostly the snake won't eat it. the only time I recommend you leave in pink in for a long period of time is with a really problematic feeder that has to be kept with their food over night.

BTW: I've never re-froze a pink more than once... some may say never do it but there are safe ways to get it done (in my opinion)

Hope that made sense
