vivarium/terrarium setup questions

manakawari Jun 05, 2005 04:36 PM

i bought my snake as a hatchling and had him for about 18 months.i have never had as much as a single problem with him in his currrent setup.he is in a sterile, all glass,no substrate type of enclosure.aside from his pvc perches, water dish, thermometer, and heater, his tank is bare.although not very pretty,i have found this limited setup to be very effective for many reasons.sterile, easy to clean, easy to keep conditions right, nothing to grow mold, nowhere for parasites to live and hide.anyway, like i said this setup has been very good to use and i hate to mess with what has worked so well for me,but it isnt a very nice environment to look at.my snake has just got his adult colors and i have always imagined having a green tree python in a natural vivarium/terrarium setup .actually this was the reason i bought one it the first place.chondros really do look special in this type of enclosure.i was wondering if any of you guys keep your snake/snakes like this and if you have any problems with it.id like to have live moss, live plants, running water, mister, fog generator,id even like to grow orchids and similar tropical flowers in my setup.i would also love to have other animals(although im sure its not possible)in the setup.what do you guys think?are all other animals possible dinner?what about dart frogs?fish in the water part?little geckos?would a full grown chondro bother messing with tiny dart frogs,or tiny geckos?i have read that captive bred dart frogs do not contain any poison,so my only concern would be losing the frog.id love some feedback on your thoughts.i am going to create a very lage vivarium, its only a question of,am i going to allow my chondro to live in it.thanks

This question seems too pop up alot. The sort of it is, anything smaller than a chondro kept in its enclosure with it will be eaten by the snake.

As for more plants etc. I think anyone who has tried keeping plants in enclosures with chondros can tell you they destory them. They seem too get curious and then end up trampling over the plants.

I feel your pain, as I raise orchids on the side. I would be nice too have them in with the snakes. But for the short amount of time they do flower, i like to enjoy them and the snakes seperately.

You can try decorating, If i only had none chondro i think i would try too do the naturalistic thing.

Good luck,
JG
