venomv999 Jun 05, 2005 06:36 PM

Anyone know how to sex water snakes without probing? I know i can always "pop" the snake but i was wondering if there was a way to find out by looking at the snake.

Popping can do a lot of damage ina an adult snake. Most colubrids, water snakes includeded can be visually sexed though it might take a little practice. Femailes are usually heavier bodied and this time of year, getting plump. Their tails taper quickly and appear shorter. Males have the hemipenes distal to the vent so their tails don't taper as fast. Some can be seen to have slight bulges at the base of the tail.

After a while you can pretty much sex adult nerodia, thamnophis and others at a glance.
