My female Russian Ratsnake

ReptiScott Jun 05, 2005 06:40 PM

Greetings all,
I have not been on here for a while but I thought I would share a recent photo of my female Russian - Alex. She just got through eating in this photo which is why she looks heavy. Interesingly enough, she seems to be a tad more jumpy than my male - Nick. I wonder if this is due to her sex, or if she just is more nervous by nature. They both are now over 5 feet long, and very strong. As they have gotten older, they also have become much more arboreal than when they were babies, spending much of their time up in branches in their enclosures.
I hope you enjoy the pic!
Scott

I don't think we see enough of these. Everybody who owns one seems to love them, but for some reason they don't show up too often here. Thanks for the pic!

Very nice looking ratsnake.A few questions for you.How long do you brumate them?Have you bred them? That's the first pic Ive seen of an adult airborne...Paul

I am glad you liked the pics jtclark and Gargoyle420. Paul, I have not yet tried to breed or even brumate them mostly because I don't have a lot of room to raise babies. I do have an incubator that I used to successfully hatch out nine Leopard Geckos but even that ended up taking up enough space as they got older I almost had to move out to the garage and turn the house into a giant reptile home LOL. Someday, once I add on, I will try to breed the Russians. They really are very gentle and they have never nipped or even tried to strike at me. My neighbors bring their kids and grandkids over to see them as their first introduction to snakes, and had no problem holding them. The snakes seemed not to mind either. It's kind of a different way to teach young folks that snakes need not be feared, but rather respected.

Happy herping,
Scott
