Couple questions

venomv999 Jun 05, 2005 06:41 PM

Today, well cleaning out the area around my pool, I found a gravid E. garter. However it was only about a foot long. Can they breed at that size in captivity?
ALso I right now have 0.0.2 eastern garters that im hoping to breed. would it be best to "pop" them to figure out their sex or probe them?

A 12 inch garter can't be gravid unless, possibly, it's a Butler's or other relatively dwarf morph. You don't bother to say where your located. If your in south east Asia the local garters may indeed get pregnant at 12 inches - I'm not sure.

If you live in North America you don't need to "pop" anything, or anybody. When females become mature they are quite obviously females - they have heavier bodies, chunkier heads and shorter tails relative top their bodies.

Popping can damage snakes permanently.
