Types of different lighting

fishyfish Jun 05, 2005 07:40 PM

I posted a little while earlier about different lights to use for a 40-50 gallon tank. I've been doing some looking around on the internet and am torn between the zoo med powersun or the zoo med reptisun 5.0 or 10.0. If i get the powersun, would you recommend using another light along with it, and if so, what kind? If i get the reptisun i would probably use that along with a heat lamp. Please offer suggestions thanks

I just got the powersun & when our AC was working ... the basking temps were a little low (91-93) by itself. Now that our AC is on the blink and the outdoor temps are reaching 90 degrees ... the temp in the tank is around 95-98.

So I guess what I'm saying is... it might work ok on its own, or you may need just a really low watt bulb to go along w/ it. I have my beardie in a 30-gal long tank (36"x12"x 17"H)

What wattage is the powersun bulb that you are using?

Do you think getting the 160 watt would be too much? The 100 watt seems to be a little low, but the 160 might be too much. what do you think?

i Just got a 100W powersun, and i don't think that it puts out too much heat. I have a 20 gallon high tank and at about 12 inches from the bulb i am getting temperatures around 90-95. So, if i could go back in time i'd get the 160W bulb. you can always change the distance of the bulb to your beardie's basking spot, and with the MVB, they are said to have a 6 foot UVB range as opposed to the max 6 inches with fluorescent bulb. one thing about the MVB is that you can't put a dimmer on them.

I say....if your beardie cage is near a window....go with the powersun....if not....do the reptisun and normal flood light.....and if you have lots of money....reptisun and powersun. ACTUALLY, could the combo of reptisun and powersun provide too much UVB? just make sure to have some shade...lol

I own a UVB tester and just for you to know. The 10.0 smokes the powersun as far as output. The high amount of UV is not necessary for survival but I swear the ones I raise with the 10.0 get better looking every day. The 5.0 is outdated so there is really no reason to consider it unless you wanna save 5 bucks. Also consider the compact flourescents, they also have an excellent UVB output. However the zoomed bulb is long and inconvenient in an incandesant fixture. The ESU 7% is the way to go with compacts. Last note...I do not recomend the Trex UV Heat at all, I have experienced problems with the life of the bulb and the UVB is not anything special.
