basking spot temps

RobertIII Jul 13, 2003 01:13 PM

hi i just got 2 baby bearded dragons the other day, i have read up on and basically have everything down except for a couple of things. first is a basking spot of about 110 ok? they are in a 60 gallon tank, with screen hood, so there is ventilation and etc. also how do you guys start your baby beardies to eat greens? just curious, because i have read that people only feed their adult beardies crickets twice a week, and veggies the rest of the time??? thank you for any help

Yes a 110 basking spot is right on the money for that age. Babies require a higher basking temp then an adult would. As babies it can be tricky to start them on greens. As babies and juvi's they need more live foods then greens. As they age to adults the beardies themselves will cut down on the bugs and take to eating a lot more greens. Greens should still be offered daily to babies though. One way I started them was to through a couple crickets right in the salad. This will get thier attention, and they might pick a few pieces of greens and realize it is a food source. As babies I always kept mine on paper towels if you do the same I found that just putting the greens right on the paper towels instead of a bowl really helped them to start picking at them. Also 1 more suggestion would be to put some colorful veggies in the mix like squash, sweet potato, and carrots. I've found that the color orange/red really drew thier interest in greens and veggies.
