my sons first wc snake

just had to tell this little story. my 7 yr old son found a baby milk crossing my driveway a week ago and asked if he could keep it. I told him he could try' but being a wild baby if it would'nt eat for us he would have to let it go. well this morning I told him it has been a week and it still has'nt eaten anything, and asked him what he was going to do? he looked at me and said he was going to let it go. i asked him when, he said at noon.Five minutes later he said he was going out to let it go instead of waiting. so with tears in his eyes he walked out back and let it go. for doing the right thing I rewarded him with a cb baby anetheristc corn from a person I met through the local herp sociaty, and damn if he did'nt smile from ear to ear.At only 7 he always helps care for our pets without us asking him to do so.If we are lucky he will always enjoy the families pets and someday grow and be another responsable herp owner.

Great story!

My own boy, who is also 7 by the way, caught his own first snake this past month. It was a Midland Brown Snake, and he wanted to keep it too. However, when I told him that those snakes only eat worms, slugs, and soft-bodied bugs, he didn't quite understand why I could scent the pinkies to make them take those...LOL.

He released it later that day, and about a week later, his sister found a hatchling black rat snake. THAT one, he really wanted to keep, but we weren't home and had no way to carry it back. So, I let him release that one too.

It's really cool seeing your kids grow to appreciate the same love of snakes in specific and nature in general, which has been important to me for the last 35 years. It's good to pass it on...
