Some advice regarding meal worms, cork board and beetles

crazyreptilelady Jun 05, 2005 09:06 PM

Thanks for your help to those who posted responses in the past for me regarding my male not putting on weight. Things are going better for me and I think he is just not eating as much as the female was definately gravid. I walked in on her laying her first 2 eggs ever this morning. Needless to say I made a mad dash to the local ag store and got a Hova Bator and I hope things work out.
On to the question...my set-up includes 2 large half-log pieces of cork bark. The leos seem to love this and they use them for a hide and to bask on at night. They climb all over them. But so do the mealworms apparently. While I was in the process of cleaning the cage tonight I noticed that I saw a few mealworms had dug their way into the cork. Then I noticed a beetle-to my surprise. Then a few more. 6 in all. I took the cork out and soaked it but is their anything I can do to keep this for happening again? I clean the dead bugs out everyday and monitor their eating but I can not see them in the cork when they dig into it like that. I don't want to take it out unless I have to. And can the beetles hurt the leos?

Thanks

Dark beetle from mealworms are no big deal for your gecko, he wont eat those but they cant really hurt him. Just remove them when you see one...and put them in a plastic box with weath bran and a piece of potato and soon you'll get a lot of mealworms

My leo loves to eat the dark beetles. I'm not sure if they have any nutrional value, so I just let her eat them as an occasional treat.

Alot of my herps refuse to eat them, not that I've ever physically tried them but I've heard some people mention that they were bitter....
