Hey everyone!
Recently I began considering getting a leopard gecko. (A loooooong time ago, while in middle school, I had a pair of anoles for about two years). I've been doing a bunch of research to make sure I do this right. Toward that end, I have (probably the first of many) a question about lighting.
Okay, so leopard geckos are nocturnal, so they don't need UVB light. That's fine. Most care sheets I've read suggest an incandescent bulb or undertank heating pad during the day, and either no lighting or a red light at night, depending on location (I'm in Wisconsin, so some heat source at night is likely required).
It is possible to just buy a red light and keep it on indefinitely? Or is it better to switch heating duties between white/red to prevent overheating the lamp and promote a day/night cycle in the gecko? If you simply use a heating pad, do you still need a lamp?
I'd like to think that sounds halfway smart.
Tristan
