How to find a hognose

the_brat_prince Jun 05, 2005 10:16 PM

Of the species of snake to be found in perry/knott county Ky two have eluded me for years one being the eastern hognose. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to find these animals in the wild believe me i need all the help i can get i just seem to be in the wrong places.
However on a morbid side note while cruising yesterday i was thinking mabey there just not in this area and no more than ten minutes later i passed what looked like a weird road killed black snake i grabbed it to examine it and it was a crushed hognose and a big one at that the pic is rather gruesome but i'll post it just to show you the size please help me locate a live one!

just road hunt in late may early june. hunt before noon, 82* or less for temperature stay in sandy areas (scrubby) hunt on humid days and look sharply at the road. and too dramadicaly increse your odds, hunt in old undeveloped neiborhoods or somewhere you can look up and down the side streets as you drive on the main roads. and always remember ,just cause your in the right habitat dose not mean there are snakes there. people have been killing and running over snakes for almost 100 years now, and their decline went from 0 - 60. add the thereat of fireants and dogs and pigs, I say (my own opinion) 20 years to only small snakes living in the wild...... no pines, no hogs, indigos, or kings.and rat snakes will get smaller too.(in size, from living on lizards all their life..)
