Any tricks to catching one?

kingsnake2 Jun 05, 2005 10:50 PM

I am moving to texas where there are lots of water snakes but I currently live in Nevada where there are no water snakes and I have never caught a water snake. Does anyone know any tricks of things you have to do to make catching a water snake esier?

It is best to wade out in the water and walk to the snake and grab it up, making sure you know exactly what you are greabbing 1st.

I would agree, plan on getting wet. Generally speaking its easier to spot a likely basking spot, before you actually spot the snake, so what I do is charge the spot, since the snakes, in most cases will flee as soon they see you, if your not close enough to them when they hit the water you probably won't catch them.

Yup, expect to get wet! And ... musked and (occassionally) bitten. This is however, all part of the joy!

Ive only caught one but i didn;t go looking in ponds. I took a stroll down my creek and grabbed one that was slithering through a tunnell near some deep water. I picked it up with a stick and popped her right into a pillow case. They usually calm down in a few days. But tongs might work out nice. Good luck!

I catch tons of Nerodia and Regina at night by just walking the edge of water and picking them up.

I am in TX now and I caught my first water snake with a tong. It had been inading my grandmother's coy pond (guess it knew she would just keep restoking it with 5 dollar coy). It was a diomond back water snake and I relocated it to a pond with lots of bass and frogs about 200 yards away. TY evryone.

When we saw at this FL watersnake and checked closely for any other snakes or gators before grabbing for a better pic, we noticed a smaller brown water snake too.(just at the bottom right of the pic)
Russ was able to get them both at the same time.
I'll post pics of them seperately later.
