How large Brown snakes to breed?

wombat Jun 05, 2005 11:12 PM

I have a Dekay's Brown Snake that I have posted pics of before- it currently weighs 7.5 g and is no more than 10-12" long...but appears to my novice eye to maybe be gravid...is there any chance of this?

This thought recently started, to my surprise. As she slid through my fingers the other day I felt distinct bumps like pearls in the latter half of her body, though it might have been tensed zig-zaggy muscles...and then when I consider it seems she has not been eating as voraciously as before, and when she does the food lump seems to stop higher in her body...and it's been a long time since she shed.

Is my imagination (high hopes) getting the better of me?

Just for thought, what do baby Brown Snakes prefer for dinner, and would a mom be cannibalistic?

Thanks!!!

I've had females drop babies at 9" long. Around here, in PA, I won't see gravid females until around August.

I had a female last year in a 10 gallon tank with another female, one of them gave birth to 13 babies. Pretty high. Sadly, I didn't know that she gave birth and I wasn't around to check on my snakes for a couple days, and 10 of them died. I let the other 3 go.

Babies will eat small slugs and worms.

Thanks,

just to be safe I'll move "maybe a mom" from her "natural setup" tank to a tupperware tub for awhile so I can easily tell if it has babies...

This brown snake has shed, if she is having babies should be soon- hard to tell if it's even a she or gravid, it's so tiny...

Do live-bearers like a secluded hide to birth in? Right now she's in a smallish tupperware with paper towel substrate... not sure if i should add a damp smaller retreat for ?her?...
