high value morphs

ed_hunter Jun 06, 2005 08:28 AM

do many people buy the high value morphs or do they just change hands between breeders? because i cant imagine somone paying so much for a leopard gecko as a pet. so im wondering if they nearly all go to other breeders for their projects or do they often go to people for pets.

Some people buy them for pets but most buy them for breeding. I'm not saying that if you breed your geckos that they're not your pets but that's the main reason for getting the high priced leos. The more you pay the better looking gecko, the better looking gecko the more you can sell the babies for.

is it just me or does this simmet stupid that the geckos are just going around in circles?

peachstategeckos Jun 06, 2005 12:50 PM

Haha, well actually leos have come along way in a very short time. Alot of breeders are working on projects for new morphs or phases so some high priced leos bought are going toward finding new morphs or producing higher quality leos.

well i dont see the point unless they are going to be available for pets and ive seen i think a $900 gecko and who the hell is gonna want somthign that expencive as a pet when they can get one for$10 i mean it isnt worth the exra expence

peachstategeckos Jun 06, 2005 02:15 PM

The ones that are that expensive are usually for breeding. The most I've ever paid fpr a gecko is $90, I wait for them to go on sale or just look for good deals.

Some people just like to go for pretty and exotic colors in their animals. The same thing happens with dog, cat, horse, and livestock breeding.

I have a SHTCT as a pet. And I did pay quite a bit of money for her. I was originally going to breed her, but changed my mind. I was worried something might go wrong and I don't want anything to happen to her. I really don't mind paying a higher price. Plus I get to show her off when someone who knows about leopard geckos comes over.

It is your opinion that it is not worth the extra expence.....

Here is a leopard gecko that can go for as much as $500..... This was the result of breeding some pretty expensive leos....

Find me a $10 leopard gecko that looks like that.....LOL

Also, the more pricey leos you can get from a breeder will generally be much more healthy that the 10 dollar one you can buy in a pet store.....

Usually you get what you pay for and if you want something thats good quality you have to be willing to pay the price. I just paid $110 for my new girl and she's worth every penny. Hell she survived a 7 day trip in a UPS truck from across the country, I'd like to see a ten dollar gecko survive a mistake like that. On top of that I've never seen a gecko go for ten dollars and I was looking for my new girl for months. Even if you get a gecko for ten dollars I'm sure its going to run you more in vet bills because of its health problems than buying a healthy gecko out right.

I completely agree with Gregg. My first leo, I got for $40 from an online pet store, and it was malnourished and very sick, and ending up costing me an additional $200 trying to save its life. Unfortunately, I couldn't. My Trixie, I got for $260, with the shipping included, and she has been very healthy. I know her medical history and have photos of her parents. She was worth the money. I honestly would recommend to people starting out to pay a little more. I did the same thing when I got my iguana 15 yrs ago. I bought one that cost me over $100, which is a lot for an iguana. My iggy is still very healthy, and has been the best pet ever.

You should also ask dog people why they are sometimes willing to pay over $1000 for a certain breed of dog. It's the same thing. I wanted a SHTCT leo, and I wanted to make sure I got the best SHTCT leo that I could afford.

Mine wasn't cheap I got him from my town pet store and he was 56 or 59 dollars with tax. I love that pet store though, It's where I got my rat years ago (R.I.P Dweezle) and it looks like a small town crappy pet store but they take good care of their animals and he had a plump tail when I got him and he wasn't overweight or to skinny. I love him so much!(even though I can't hold him yet fiesty little thing) They have birds too and they are nice looking no plucked feathers or anything except one but it was a little patch up by his neck I think it was from another bird though and now he's alone in his cage. But anyway I'm ranting long story short I have a good pet store to depend on! And a great gecko!
