$500 vet bill

umop_apisdn Jun 06, 2005 09:19 AM

that was originally quoted at $250 max. the vet sure did do a good job warning me of this outrageous bill (sarcasm). i dont mean to sound harsh, but i cannot afford that for medicating a single gecko, then getting it back and it looks to be in worse shape than when i took it in. now im left to carry out the rest of the medication myself.

and she does not look good at all, twice as worse at least as when i brought her in. im basically crossing my fingers that she'll still be here when i get back from work.

i know vets are expensive ( my girlfriend is a vet tech) but that is a TON for medicating a gecko, doing a fecal, and a blood test. anything i'm leaving out that they probably did on it?

That really sucks mike but least the vet didn’t Kill your gecko like mine did……

Unfortunately I let my vet talk me into letting him use anesthesia before amputating a leg off my chahoua who had been severely injured by male breeder. Having read as much literate on the subject as I could I was against it, however , the vet said he highly recommended it and acted as if there was absolutely no risk in using anesthesia at all. He told me he had given it to far smaller geckos etc etc etc…..With him supposedly being the best reptile vet in the state I let him talk me into it……and well he killed her…..she never recovered from the anesthesia….I had been hand feeding her and giving her antibiotics for over a month…..So try to keep in mind that could be worse….

I had a similar experience with one of my prized (and favorite) chameleons. Dr. was a replacement vet for my normal, I was leery, but he was the vet, my vet trained under, so I figured it would be ok... HA. She had an eye injury from a fall and was doing well, but I needed him to give me some injectible fluids for her. He said she was likely to have brain damage, and he was going to give her something (I forget the name) to shrink the swelling in the brain. Shrinking anything in the brain was pretty unsettling to me, but he made it sound like she'd have a brain hemmorhage and die if he didnt give it to her.. she died a short while after the injection.

Sorry your vet experience turned out bad. Man that is expensive, might as well buy a new pair at that price. What exactly did they do on her that cost so much? I know they did about every possible thing on mine except a fecal and it cost about 1/5 of what yours cost. Did they give a solid reason on why she is sick? Also I am curious as to why the vet wanted the gecko to stay overnight. All of the tests, blood, fecal and examination can be done without leaving the gecko overnight. Sounds like she is going to need a lot of TLC. I wish you the best of luck with her.

Is that you don't see they have a problem until it's too late, as compared to say a cat or a dog. Not saying this is what happened in your case.

Just they are so more difficult, and so FEW Vets are actually trained in exotic species such as herps.

i ended up paying $497.25 at first...

then called and complained...came to find out there was $90.50 i was charged for bloodwork that was never performed. that brings us down to $406.75, then due to the fact that no one ever bothered to call and inform me that the bill was going to be much higher than originally estimated (twice as much, actually), they knocked off another $117 for what they could (services, overpriced to begin with). so that brings me down to $289.75, along with a dead gecko. from now on im only getting fecals done there, which run about $18. if i can find a cheaper place that will do it, ill go there. all i know is the only thing this vet has ever successfully treated for me was mites, which cost me $100. later i found out how easy it can be to treat mites yourself. i wish i had enough strength in chemistry/physiology to become a vet myself and be able to do all this stuff at actual cost. $289.75 is a hell of a lot of money to pay and get nothing in return.

Man that sucks I would have thown a fit and had them pay for the gecko! Or you can tale them to court or file a clame with the BBB. That is a total rip off man I am sorry to hear that.
