Weekend photos

cable_hogue Jun 06, 2005 10:32 AM

Here are a few pictures from the weekend. I was all over the state, from the S. E. to the northern parts of Arizona and saw quite a few interesting critters.

From S. E. AZ...

Here is a young male P. cornutum.

A male leopard

A rather large femal leopard

A male P. modestum waking up

A female modestum trying to disappear

A Shrike (I believe), the bane of horned lizards...

From closer to home, a female I found on the dirt road to many a hiking trail, not 50 feet from the two lane highway.

From the north country....

The spring we hiked to. Water coming right out of the mountain side, very cool...

A yearling P. hernandesi. (poor picture

A cool butterfly along the trail..

Cheers!

I don'y post here because I am mostly a chuck person but have a love of all desert wildlife so I check out all the desert lizard forums. That baby has such a fat belly he reminds me of a chuck. HEHE. Love the LL photos also-great series-thanks. Tom Greb

Hey Cable,

Awesome pictures! I love those Leopards....=) I hadn't realized how spiny the modestum really are. How are yours by the way? and not to be picky, but no worries about the bird, its a Western Kingbird. Shirkes don't have that nice yellow breast whereas the kingbirds do. Tucson was fun, by the way. I tell you about it later. =) Talk to you soon hopefully, and awesome pictures.

Hey Phil,
Glad you liked the photos. I noosed that female Leopard and debated keeping her, but I have enough charges and released her right where I caught her. Man was she ready to bit!
The modestum are doing fine. They are large and eating P. rugosus, crickets, grasshoppers (with relish) and P. californicus.
Drop me an email about your trip. Man, you didn't stop by! LOL.

Cable the color of the Modestum on the rock seems unusually dark to me? Was that an actual place you found him or did you put him up oin the rock? Just curious, also he seems to be very large? Mist of these are 4 inches or so that I ahve seen, more like the second picture you shpwed, but that one looks to be a brusier to me, maybe its just the camera and I don't actually have a decent reference to size. I can legally catch these here and plan on making a trip out shortly to see if I can locate some, I live withon 50 or so miles of their eastern range.....great pictures!!

Hey Lou,
That male was photographed right where I found him. He was so still during the process I had to pick him up to make sure he wasn't dead. He hardly moved at all during the process. He was placed right back on the spot to continue his warm up process.
His color is different. They usually have more red/pink in them as the female shows.
Look for them on gentle up slopes up to the base of hills. They seem to like very rocky ground. I know of two spots for them and they are both very similar and as described above.
Glad you all liked the photos. We've had a few good trips this summer so far.
Cheers!
