Local Species Sold As Something Exotic!?

reako45 Jun 06, 2005 11:10 AM

I recently bought what I thought was an African Red Foot something or other toad and when I got home I looked @ it's physical characteristics (color, pattern, light dorsal strip, lack of cranial crests) and have since heard it's voice (light chirping). Through hopping around to some of my favorite Bufo ID sights I was able to ID it as a Bufo boreas/Western toad which are plentiful up @ Griffith Park. It's possible my guy was caught there and sold/advertised in a pet store as some exotic type of toad to bump up the price.

That sucks. The places around here are pretty good at not using the wrong name for a toad or a frog.

It is possible that you were scammed, but I think it's also possible that you did buy an exotic toad. Bufo species look very similar and are easily confused with each other if you don't know what to look for. It's also possible that the pet store you purchased it from recieved western toads instead of the exotic species they ordered, but simply didn't know the difference and labelled them as the original species that they placed an order for.
