tank and hood

lele Jun 06, 2005 11:56 AM

The 75 gal. that I am getting comes with a full hood. Currently I have a screen on Darwin's tank and rest the lights on them or hang above. The hood will be great for the fluorescent, but not sure about mounting basking light(s). This seems like a such simple/common sense question :-/ but I am a bit stuck (I know this will be another head-slapping "duh" solution, lol!. How do you guys set yours up - or should I just get a screen?

thanks,
lele

unfortunately its hard to come by screen tops for 75g tanks. I've looked. Thats why i went with a 55 for now (well that and i got the tank and light for $20)

Problem with full hoods is what would you do with the basking lamp and air circulation? You can't set the lamp on it as it could melt if its plastic and if its glass that would be like a green house.

for a temporary solution get some 1" x 1" pine from the local wood shop and get some window screen, make your own. I'm sure you can find some screen tops online too.

wait almost forgot about this place, and they do have a 48" x 18" which is a 75g right? or is it 24" i don't remember. Anyhow pretty cheap prices, not sure about shipping

I dont really like the full hoods, they dont allow for very good circulation and its pretty impossible to get the basking lamps in. If you cant find a screen lid for the tank (I had to buy mine from a specialty tropical fish store) I would either make one, or you can buy two 40gallon breeder lips and bend up one of the lips and then overlap them to cover the tank

well, thanks for the replies and links, but when I got to the house to pick everything up it was just the strip light - she was calling it a hood, so I assumed that it was a hood - silly me! lol!!

I had not thought about finding a screen to fit it(!) but I think reptile direct has them. Even if I have to pay more to get it shipped, still a great deal. The tank and stand are in great condition and the strip light is less than a month old! They even gave me bulb, but it is just an aquarium bulb - I'll use it on my plants. They also gave me a really nice piece of wood (that I will be sterilizing), a fake plant and a black light heat bulb. Not sure when I'll use the bulb but heck - I have it! This was an ebay deal for $65!!
