feeder quality and pickiness

Carlton Jun 06, 2005 01:54 PM

Hi all,

I have never posted about a non-feeding bp before but here I am! I have an unknown age (4' male) rescue bp that has been in my care for about 2 years. He's always been healthy, never been a picky eater, never fasted during winter, and has eaten either F/T adult mice or rats without a fuss. Good weight, shedding well, drinking, alert and acting normally. He's in a Vision cage with a radiant heat panel, cool side about 78, warm side about 94 F, bark hides, with a humidity box that he uses a lot. Humidity level varies from 30% to about 70%. Aspen chip bedding. I have only one local source for F/T feeders which he used to take readily until about 4 months ago. Then I noticed the size of the feeders has changed quite a bit so I called to see if the shop changed their source. They said no, but my bp has refused everything offered to him since about that time. He is normally fed in a separate cat kennel at night. He would either take it from my hand or go after it by himself if left. Just a really settled snake. Now I'm getting concerned. Can a feeder be too small if he's gotten used to large rats? I know the feeders can smell different if the breeder changed bedding or diet too. I would change my source, but I am in SE Alaska and have not ordered frozen feeders directly before. Everything takes longer to get here and costs more. But, I am ready to change feeder sources hoping that might be the problem. What am I missing? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have had a sick snake for almost a month (RI from hell) and when he gurgles he does not eat
he is on an upswing so i am gonna have my Daughter feed him today before I get home
I do know that my Daughters Ball will not eat anything that has been exposed to Freezer air, or been freezer burned

I have been told it makes no difference to the snake, but it seems to for her. She pounds 2 small rats (but not Mediums, go figure) but will only eat one, even if hungry if it has any Freezer burn on it

Good Luck
Let me know what you learn
