Female on her 5th clutch

crotaphytusman Jun 06, 2005 03:30 PM

I have a question. It looks like my female is on her fifth clutch. She looks huge again and it's been 18 days from her last clutch. Her avg. between is 22 days so I am getting ready for yet another clutch. My question is, how normal is it for a collard to have over 4 clutches consecutively? I have been feeding both of them like crazy and they look and act as healthy as can be but I am just worried that she will get a bit stressed out with all this egg laying. Any input would be great on this subject. I am still waiting on those eggs. Thanks.

In the wild, I would say two clutches is the norm...in captivity, under the conditions you've stated, 5 clutches is not unusual. I've heard from a couple others that they've had 5 clutches. A good full diet and supplementing, and you can have great success. If you don't want to get so many clutches, backing off on the diet a bit, would probably stop the ovulation process earlier. One of my females being kept exclusively outdoors in on her second clutch now. I rarely supplement their diet outside. I don't think she will triple clutch, but who knows :O)

twitch a little in her toes after it was all over with. All the egg laying ZAPS their calcium levels for sure.

Like Johneee said make sure she is super well supplimented, even with that my girl still got twitchy, so just keep your eye on her!

Congratulations on all the eggs, give your girl a treat!
