Lump on Syth.. what is this?

ramanth Jun 06, 2005 03:50 PM

My crested, Syth, hasn't grown in length or bulk since I first got him back in February, despite his good appetite (crickets and baby food).

However, he has been developing a lump at the base of his tail.

Is his gecko manhood developing or is it something else entirely?

When I first got him:

That is no "manhood" that is a disease I would take him to the vet ASAP.

Those "balls" are way bigger than they should be for a gecko that size unless you giving him steroids or somthing.

i would agree with derek, those are the hemipenis.... BUT are wayyyyyy to huge for that sized gecko. that gecko from the picture looks like it may be 15-20 grams, and the "bulge" looks like it may fit or even be too big for a 50 gram male.

Okay, thanks.

how old is the lizard? it looks awfully skinny, and if it eats like u say it does and has not gained any weight there is a possibility it could have internal parisites, and may just be very resillient to them. i would have a fecal exam done by a Vet, to see if he has everything in order in that manner, as for the bulge, my initial response is that it appears to be the developing of the hemipenes, but it does look a little oddly shaped, and as if it is only on one side, clearer pictures are needed of the underbelly from straghit on. A good way to get that shot is by putting it against some glass or see through plastic, so that we can get a clearer viewpoint. also if Randy from NeoScales posts on here im sure he will post a link about internal parisites and crested geckos that will be helpful

Thanks. I'm going to give the vet a call.

Here is a more straight on shot that I took last night. The lump is hard and he doesn't react in pain. I give him baby food and GCD and dust his crickets with calcium. His poop looks okay and he's misted daily. I'm just baffled.

Yeah, that whitish spot isn't normal, definitly take him to the vet.

He has a white spot on either side of the lump. I thought those were his 'spurs'.

Syth has an appointment for 4:50 today. Wish us luck!

AndrewEllis Jun 07, 2005 02:04 PM

the white "spurs" are indeed supposed to be there, its the large red and white area on the bottom of the bulge that alerted the rest of us. good luck at the vets. hope it all turns out well

honuman Jun 07, 2005 01:46 PM

It looks like he has an infection in there. The red and then the white area would indicate that. He needs anibiotics. There may also be necrotic tissue in there that needs to be removed. Hopefully it is just an infection that can be cleared up and Syth won't have to have anything amputated. Good luck with him at the vet.

the area seems to be inflamed, so as Derek said, take it to a vet, it needs the attention, be prepared to discuss all the treatment options that fit within your budget before deciding what to do, and preferably go out of your way to find a vet that has at least a modicum of experience with reptiles if that is possible. good luck!

i can say were all glad you joined KS, probably saved your guy's life! Good call on that one, you might be looking at amputation of one of the hemepenes, maybe both, im not sure if anyone has experience with a double amputation, but that bulge looks pretty bad. Also, dont worry if he drops his tail at the vets, might happen. Anyways, good luck with Syth, keep us all posted!

Thanks. I'm glad I posted here too. I've been out of town and the bump was small when I left. I haven't really handled him in awhile and I never saw it when he was hanging out in his viv. I wish I had caught it sooner and hopefully it's not too late.
