I think my female is gravid

astronut1885 Jun 06, 2005 04:22 PM

About three weeks ago I bought a 18 month old blizzard male to pair up with my normal female. The first fwe days, he was rather aggressive toward her and displayed mating behavior, but since, he's been very mellow toward her. I've noticed her gaining alot of weight, even more than she used to when she'd have a big feeding, and even with that she would thin back down. Now I'm noticing the tell tale white areas on her belly on both sides. She's eating like a pig, and she was already pretty plump to begin with. I think I can almost feel one of the possible eggs where the white area is, but the other side I can't. I'm hoping she's gravid, because I'd love to get some offspring from the pair. How long will it be until she lays eggs if she got pregnant two weeks ago?
Thanks guys!

Forgot to mention, she's over 2 years old and never been bred. This is her first tankmate, otherwise she's been a bachelorette her entire life lol.

Well it's great that she's eating alot. Just keep watching her and seperate he from the male. Make sure there is a humid hide and that you've got a incubator ready.

I just put a hide in there with about 2-3" of sphagnum moss in it for her to lay her eggs in. I'm leaving the male in with her unless I see a problem, and so far he seems "whipped" by her. She's pretty territorial, and he hasn't even made an aggressive move at her since the mating behavior. If I see a problem, I'll seperate them, but right now I'm going to leave 'em alone. I don't have an incubator yet, I'm going to look into something asap. I'm hoping this turns out good. In a few days I am going to try and get her to eat a pinkie mouse, and him too for that matter, because he could use a little bulking up, and she can use all the food she can get.

Wow, you bought a blizzard three weeks ago and put it in with your female right away??? Have you ever heard of a thing called a quarentine period??? Usually a quarentine period last for a minimum of 90 days....

astronut1885 Jun 06, 2005 05:35 PM

I bought it from a private owner (friend of mine) who was quarantining it before I bought it. He was on his own for 2 months before I brought him home. I didn't just throw him in with my female unaware.

You should never introduce an animal form a pet store or breeder or friends collection into your collection until YOU have quarentined it yourself for 3 months.... This is a good thing to do because if you do not do it, the one lizard you brought in from your friends collection can kill yours or make them very sick....

I buy leos from some of the best breeders around and I have gotten some from friends..... Each and every animal that I aquire gets the standard 90 day quarentine period, no matter who it comes from....

I hear you. I just figured since I had arrainged for this critter to be mine a while back, and it had been kept alone for that period of time, that it would be ok. I would never have put him with her had I not known he had been kept alone for me. I guess I should have done it myself, but it's too late now. Any geckos I get in the future won't be put in with them until they have been quarantined. So far there's been no problems, so I'm hoping it all works out for the best.

Good deal Rob.... It is in the best interest of your pets and it will save you a huge headache and lots of money in vet bills.....LOL
