Maybe my lizard has Parasites?

Lightning_Hunter Jun 06, 2005 08:38 PM

I'm starting to get a little worried about the Alligator Lizard I caught the other day. Her tick problem is gone now, but I'm starting to wonder if she has internal parasites (maybe worms). I'm thinking that maybe she is extra fat because of parasites and not pregnancy. First, I've noticed that she hasn't ever pooped on me when I hold her, which is abnormal for an Alligator Lizard. Even when I first caught her, I wasn't the slightest bit messy from feces, which is strange. I don't see any feces in her cage either. In addition, she sure isn't moving much. It could be because she is still in a tiny cage (I'm going to move her to a big one tomorrow), but she seems to only move to different places in the cage every few hours or so. Are any of these things common among pregnant Alligator Lizards, or are these signs of internal parasites?

Virtually all wild caught alligator lizards are going to have internal parasites. As long as you keep the cage clean, they are almost never a problem. Not all als will "let loose" when you pick them up. Since your lizard is new, give her some time to adjust. As long as she's eating and drinking normally, she should be fine. All the handling required to remove her ticks was probably pretty stressful, give her some time with minimal handling to calm down and get acclimated to her new situation. Her large midsection is much more likely to be the result of developing eggs than parasites.

Thanks for the reassurance; I guess that's what I was looking for.

There is one tick left (inside her ear) that doesn't want to come out. I'm not going to dig around with forceps, so I'm just going to wait. Once all the ticks seem to be gone, I'll move her to a big cage.

she seemed calm and almost tame, and very fat. after she dumped(14 eggs) she got very mean, again, just like normal. dont worry, be happy, good luck!
